uLaw commits to respect privacy and describes in the following paragraphs the measures adopted therefore. uLaw complies with the Belgian applicable provisions and the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 dated 27 April 2017 (GPDR) and wishes users to feel confident when browsing the website. 

The following paragraphs explain the privacy policy applied by uLaw regarding your personal data and private life, the procedure and rules regarding the data collected from you, how this information data are used by uLaw or disclosed when you use the services or website of uLaw or affiliated website and applications.

uLaw may collect information relating to you online and offline. 

When creating your profile, you agree and acknowledge to the collection of these data’s, to their publication and diffusion according to the Terms of Use and to the present privacy policy. 

When creating your account and using uLaw’s services, you communicate to uLaw the following information : 

  • Personal information: In the course of using the service (whether as a user-client or user-lawyer), uLaw may require or otherwise collect information that identifies you as a specific individual and can be used to contact or identify you (“personal information”). Examples of personal information include your name, email address, company address, billing address, and phone number.
  • Professional information regarding your career, education, publications, in order to allow users to receive a transparent information;
  • Identity information:  uLaw may collect personal information, such as your date of birth or taxpayer identification number, to validate your identity or as may be required by law, such as to complete tax filings. We may request documents to verify this information, such as a copy of your government-issued identification or photo or a billing statement. 
  • Payment information: If you use the service to make or receive payments, we will also collect certain payment information;
  • Non-identifying information: uLaw also may collect other information, such as zip codes, demographic data, information regarding your use of the services and general project-related data. uLaw may aggregate information collected from uLaw registered and non-registered users. Usernames are not considered as such non-identifying information made public through the service and are viewable by other users.

The service is general audience and intended for users having 18 years and older. uLaw does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than age 18. If uLaw becomes aware that a child younger than 18 has provided personal information, uLaw will use commercially reasonable efforts to delete such information from its files. uLaw is professional lawyer association that, as user-lawyers, is subject to strict confidentiality and deontological obligations. uLaw makes its best efforts to ensure that no such confidential information is posted or published on the website. If you believe that any information on the website or in an affiliated environment is confidential and should be removed, you must immediately inform uLaw. Any user-lawyer is invited to refer to its deontological code of conduct. 

uLaw may also receive automatically certain personal information (please refer to explanations regarding the use of cookies) or from third-parties that are, if managed with personal information collected by uLaw, subject to the Terms of Use. uLaw and its partners use cookies or similar technologies to analyze trends, administer the website, track users’ movement around the website, and to gather demographic information about our user base as a whole. The technology used to collect information automatically from users may include Web Beacons, Embedded Scripts or Tags.

When creating a profile and your account, you transfer certain information to uLaw to which other users will have access in order for uLaw to provide the requested services. This can include your hourly rate, address, experience or other personal and professional information. This information is shared with users of uLaw and allows uLaw to render its services. In addition to the information posted on the website, uLaw also collects information allowing the calculation of lawyers’ rating. Please refer to the section pertaining to the rating in the Terms of Uses for more information. 

Positive feedback from users are posted on the website, on an anonymous basis, and after moderation. You acknowledge and agree to these information being posted with your profile. You may ask for feedback to be deleted by asking uLaw. 

Data processing for the provision of uLaw’s services 

In order for uLaw to render the services your request, the following information is collected: 

  • Personal information, professional information, payment information and non-identifying information as defined here above;
  • Username, password, area of law concerned by your query, email address, summary of your case, curriculum vitae, preferred financial terms for the collaboration, relevant experiences, administrative attests, proposed methodology, dead lines, work performed, time spent, working papers and documents. 

The information is collected to allow uLaw to render the services your request from uLaw, including the use of uLaw’s search engine, call for tender interface, payment interface and dashboard and to communicate with your regarding the services, through email or notifications. 

The processing of this information is necessitated in order to perform the services you request from uLaw, including: 

  • to provide and improve the service, complete your transactions, and address your inquiries, process your registration, verify the information you provide is valid, and for compliance and internal business purposes; 
  • to contact you with administrative communications and uLaw newsletters, marketing or promotional materials and other information that may be of interest to you;
  • to tailor content we display to you and offers we may present to you, both on the service and elsewhere online;
  • to administer and develop our business relationship with you and, if applicable, the corporation or other legal entity you represent;
  • to assess your proposal to perform a project for uLaw and prepare related governmental and internal statistics reports;
  • to enforce and comply with the law, including to conduct investigation, to protect the property and rights of uLaw or a third party, to protect the safety of the public or any person, or to prevent or stop activity we may consider to be, or to pose a risk of being, illegal, fraudulent, unethical or legally actionable activity. We may also use device identifiers to identify uLaw users;
  • for the purposes disclosed at the time you provide your information, with your consent, and as further described in this Privacy policy. 

The information collected is kept as long as you maintain your account and for 5 years after deletion or closing of your account, except if you ask uLaw to delete them earlier or if requested by law. You have the right to oppose to the processing of your personal information collected for marketing purposes by taking contact with uLaw. 

Personal information are published in accordance with the Terms of Use, among other, in the following circumstances : 

  • in order to put users into relation;
  • when uLaw or a user-lawyer must contract with a third-party service provider or to analyse how its services are performed;
  • if requested by law, by a valid and enforced judgment or administrative decision. uLaw collaborates with authorities in order to ensure the application of the law. In that context, uLaw determines in its sole discretion which information should be shared;
  • some information are transferred to employees, agent or service providers.  

uLaw may work with network advertisers, ad agencies, analytics service providers and other vendors to provide us with information regarding traffic on the service, including pages viewed and the actions taken when visiting the service; to serve uLaw’s advertisements on other web sites, within mobile apps and elsewhere online; and to provide uLaw with information regarding the use of the service and the effectiveness of advertisements. uLaw’s service providers may collect certain information about your visits to and activity on the service as well as other websites or services, they may set and access their own tracking technologies on your device (including cookies and web beacons), and may use that information to show you targeted advertisements.

uLaw makes sure to secure the information transmitted and collected through secured communication processes. uLaw respect the applicable market practices and standards but you should remind that no transmission method is fully secure. uLaw can therefore not represent such entirely secure transmission. uLaw fights against fishing as any respectful Internet operator. If you suspect such activities to take place on the website or around users, you must immediately contact uLaw.

uLaw will do the necessary to satisfy your demand as soon as practically feasible. The applicable law in Belgium also allows you to submit your claim to the Belgian authority controlling the processing of your data. 

In the event that you would delete or ask for the deletion of your personal information, you will not be able to use the website and request the services offered by uLaw. Certain information will be kept for administrative purpose in accordance with applicable law after the deletion or closing of your account and in order for uLaw to perform the services requested. 

uLaw is not responsible for the privacy policy applied by the website to which the uLaw website links.
